photos.snand.org is live!

to all snanders, our photo site is now a live and operational photo backup site. I have spent the last month or so importing ALL my digital photos, identifying people, categorizing by date, mapping locations, etc. at this point we’ve reached what I would call an operational state.

a brief explanation and history. for years now I’ve been looking for a way to safely house, manage, maintain and present my digital photo collection. as such I have been looking for a system that I can use and share with multiple users for many, many years. some time back it became obvious that I needed a site to host these because there’s just too damn many to search for photos by folder. I needed a visual way to present these and so for the last several years I’ve been using smugmug.

smugmug has been great but it costs a fair bit and at the end of the day, and I am happy having an offsite backup and a way to present them. however, any work or edits done on their site needs to either be replicated back home or my collection gos out of sync and leads to duplication. additionally, they don’t store original videos and it requires a fair bit of manual work to upload and sort them. when talking about 60k or so photos that’s not an easy challenge to solve.

instead, I’ve moved to this self-hosted solution called librephotos. this is an open source fork of an older project called ownphotos, which is a self-hosted replacement for google photos. this is the result of a multi-year search and testing of various solutions and the one I’ve settled on. librephotos is the most feature and functional platform that I could find and while some others might seem nicer, I ran into paywalls, performance walls that I just didn’t with librephotos.

Anyway, long post for no reason other than I’m bored and I hope people actually use this thing. I am also working on immich which will likely take over someday as the main photo site however for now it’s just a phone/tablet image backup system.

so login, check it out, start adding your own photos if you like and if there is something you would like to see of mine, just ask and I will share them.

p.s. don’t I forget about immich.

rip mitnick.

I had no idea he was even sick. I honestly don’t know much about the man these days other than he shows up in our HR security training but I’ve grown up reading of his exploits and transition over to a whitehat.

as an aging IT drone, it’s a shock; he was so young. I should probably get to the bottom of this pain in my own side soon.

interesting article.

since I keep saying this is my replacement for social media, might as well share an interesting article that my wife shared with me.

as a long time science nerd who has been fascinated with the scientific side of the atomic age (but horrified by the destructive result) I’ve been wanting to see Oppenheimer. to find out he lived in my favorite place in the world is wild.

anyway, I’m at work, so not enough time to read the whole thing now but here it is for later 🙂
